More than 400 new coronavirus cases confirmed in city and county in 24 hours

More than 400 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed across the city and county, according to the latest official statistics.

Statistics released yesterday showed 168 cases were recorded in the 24 hours to Christmas Day, while in the rest of the county 275 new infections were confirmed, making a total of 443.

Charnwood recorded 91 new infections, with 29 in Harborough.

Hinckley and Bosworth recorded 35 new cases, and there were 32 in North West Leicestershire.

There were 35 cases in Oadby and Wigston, 27 in Blaby and 26 in the Melton district.

The new cases mean the total number of cases across the city and county since the start of the pandemic, area-by-area, are :

  • Leicester: 20,931

  • Blaby: 3,885

  • Charnwood: 7,401

  • Harborough: 2,591

  • Hinckley and Bosworth: 3,147

  • Melton: 1,497

  • North West Leicestershire: 2,873

  • Oadby and Wigston: 3,049

In other coronavirus news, more than 20,000 people across the city and county had received their first doses of the vaccine by Sunday, December 20, according the NHS Figures released yesterday.

They are largely those in the vulnerable over-80s age bracket, but some care home workers and frontline NHS staff have also been treated.

There are now more than 10 locations – from GP surgeries to large community vaccination centres – where people are getting appointments when their turn comes.

Meanwhile, millions more people in England were placed into Tier 4 from today, while Leicestershire will remain in Tier 3.

Announcing changing in tier status in areas across the country earlier this week, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the coronavirus, including new variants, was spreading at a “dangerous rate”.

The latest seven-day infection rates, area by area, are:

  • Leicester: 315 cases per 100,000

  • Blaby: 229 cases per 100,000

  • Charnwood: 191 cases per 100,000

  • Harborough: 211 cases per 100,000

  • Hinckley and Bosworth: 213 cases per 100,000

  • Melton: 187 cases per 100,000

  • North West Leicestershire: 198 cases per 100,000

  • Oadby and Wigston: 306 cases per 100,000
