Man dies in A50 crash involving three lorries and car

A man has died after a serious crash involving three lorries and a car on the A50 near Derby.

The incident, which took place just before 7pm on Tuesday, January 12, saw the road closed in both directions near Chellaston.

Multiple emergency services, including police, ambulances and firefighters were called to the incident, which closed the road between J4 at Toyota and J2 at Alvaston.

The incident caused long delays on the A50, with people reporting being in traffic for more than an hour while emergency services dealt with the aftermath.

It has now been confirmed by emergency services that a man in his 30s died at the scene of the crash and police have released an appeal for witnesses.

A spokesperson for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 7.05pm on Tuesday 12 January to the A50.

“The caller reported a Road Traffic Collision.

“We sent a paramedic in an ambulance car, two crewed ambulances, a medical first responder and two responders from the Air Ambulance.

“We transported one patient to Royal Derby Hospital.”

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Constabulary said: “We are appealing for witnesses after a man sadly died in a collision last night on the A50 near Chellaston.

“The incident was reported to us just before 7pm yesterday (Tuesday 12 January) and involved three lorries and a car.

“The A50 was closed both ways while emergency services attended the scene.

“Sadly, a man aged in his 30s died at the scene and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

“Officers investigating the collision would like to hear from anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam footage which could help with their inquiries.”
